Today's businesses are under ever-increasing pressure to deliver more value for less effort. The speed of adaptation of business applications to changing needs has become a bottleneck for successful business growth in a number of sectors. CEO's are finding that they can develop a new product line faster than their DBAs can develop a new application to manage it. This has created a need for Dynamic Business Applications - applications that can adapt quickly to new business situations. In this talk, Dean Allemang will describe how the Semantic Web technologies of the W3C, along with the TopBraid Suite development platform, provide a powerful capability to design, build and deploy dynamic business applications. The presentation will include a description of how these technologies enable dynamic business applications, as well as a demonstration of the capability as applied to enterprise vocabulary management. Dean Allemang, Chief Scientist at TopQuadrant, specializes in innovative applications of knowledge technology and brings over 15 years of experience in research, deployment, and development of knowledge-based systems. He developed the curriculum for Top Quadrant's successful training series for Semantic Web technologies, which he has been presenting to customers world-wide for several years. Dean has completed a master's degree at the University of Cambridge as a Marshall scholar, a PhD at the Ohio State University as a National Science Foundation Graduate Scholar, and is a two-time winner of the Swiss Prize for Innovation in Technology. Along with Prof. Jim Hendler, Dean is co-author of the successful Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist (Morgan-Kaufmann, 2008), already in second printing and translated into Korean.

Join us as we learn about Semantic Mediawiki, and set up our own instance. We'll then collaboratively add content to our domain wswm.org. We end the evening with a discussion on reusing our data and mashups with other data sources.

Applications bring the Semantic Web alive - revealing its value. Using open source tools and useful examples, we demonstrate practical methods to exercise the Semantic Web based upon on our Wiley book, "Semantic Web Programming". We open with a "Hello Semantic Web World" application that outlines the key components to a Semantic Web application, quickly moving on to our "FriendTacker" Semantic Web application that demonstrates integration through the semantic unification of Jabber Instant Message buddies, WordPress Blogs, Facebook Social networks, and more touching on longitudinal and geospatial considerations. We finish with the four key Semantic Web application challenges ahead as the Semantic Web progress pushes into new data frontiers to encourage us all to contribute realize the Semantic Web's potential. John and Ryan will also sign their book that night for you starting at 6pm. In case you don't have a copy there will be plenty of Semantic Web Programming books in the store. :-) Speaker: John Hebeler John Hebeler is an avid explorer of new technologies for the development of large-scale, distributed systems. In the last five years, he has focused on the Semantic Web and emergent, distributed systems. He has published published papers, has co-written a P2P networking book, and presents at major technical conferences around the world. He is currently pursing his PhD in Information Systems at the University of Maryland. He is a division scientist for BBN technologies. Ryan Blace Ryan Blace has been a Semantic Web developer and BBN Technologies employee since 2004. He works on multiple large-scale Semantic Web-based knowledge management systems for the government and commercial sectors. Ryan holds a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland and is pursuing his master’s in Computer Science at Virginia Tech. When not spending late nights on his computer hacking away, Ryan spends his time cycling, mountain biking, and instructing at car club track days.

There is a lot happening these days in government involvement with open linked data. We've talked about this a number of times in our previous meetings. But in this month's meeting, we move from talking to doing. Our guest speaker will be Kevin Novak, from the W3C committee on eGovernment. The W3C has put guidelines up for creating and linking Open Linked Data for eGovernment - see Tim Berners-Lee's http://www.w3.org/De signIssues/GovData for details. Kevin will discuss the work that the W3C has been doing. In this session, we also invite those who have published linked data to show us how. We will be getting into the technical details, with demos and code examples. Cory Casanave, of Model Driven, will demonstrate the creation of linked data using models from the GSA and also show a projection to the FEA Data Reference Model. We will be meeting in the SHRM conference room in Alexandria, at the TopQuadrant office. The best place to park is in the garage under King Street Station building (not the metro, this is the name of an office complex). Entrances are on Diagonal Road opposite the metro station. If you need help with getting to the location, Metro, or parking, please contact Eileen Daley at edaley@topquadrant.c om or at 703 299 9330. See http://www.stationma sters.com/System_Map /KINGSTRT/kingstrt.h tml for a detailed map of the area.

Some of our members are attending the Semantic Technologies Conference in San Jose. That's great, but we can't let them keep all of that new knowledge to themselves! For the rest of you who are unable to make it, we wouldn't want you to feel left out of the SemTech spirit! In our June meeting, we will discuss the latest news, products, and services coming out of the conference. We will also set aside time to mingle, so that our newer members can meet the "old-timers" . For those of you who have not seen the conference information, it is http://semantic-conf erence.com/ Join us at the Reiter's bookstore in DC for a wine and cheese reception, and a discussion of the latest and greatest in semantic technologies.
