SUMMARY:The Story of Topic Maps and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Semantic Web Meetups > The New York Semantic Web Meetup Group\n
\nMichel will present the core of Topic Maps and how he sees the future of
Topic Maps in context of the Semantic Web. Michel Biezunski is an internati
onally recognized expert in the field of information management. He has inv
ented and promoted new ways of finding information\, accelerating access to
information which is really needed\, and helping organize vast corpora of
information assets. His working experience covers various domains\, includi
ng the publishing\, finance\, healthcare\, and media industries\, and gover
nmental agencies. \n\nMichel's focus is in the area of semantic integration
 \, auditable information systems\, XML/SGML Applications\, navigation model
s within complex information sets\, and hyperlink-based models. He particip
ated in the development of the HyTime standard\, and is recognized as the i
nventor of the Topic Maps standards\, together with Steven R. Newcomb. He h
as written many articles and developed and conducted numerous workshops cen
tered on these new technologies. Michel is now working on innovative soluti
ons for auditability and integration of information systems.\n\nNew York\,

SUMMARY:SPARQL Basic Graph Pattern Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Semantic Web Meetups > The New York Semantic Web Meetup Group\n
\nMarkus Stocker\n\nIn this presentation\, Markus describes the problem of
Basic Graph Pattern (BGP) optimization for SPARQL queries and main memory g
raph implementations of RDF data. He defines and analyzes the characteristi
cs of heuristics for selectivity-based static BGP optimization. The heurist
ics range from simple triple pattern variable counting to more sophisticate
d selectivity estimation techniques. Customized summary statistics for RDF
data enable the selectivity estimation of joined triple patterns and the de
velopment of efficient heuristics. Using the Lehigh University Benchmark (L
UBM)\, we evaluate the performance of the heuristics for the queries provid
ed by the LUBM and discuss some of them in more details.\n\nNew York\, NY
