SHER: A Scalable Highly Expressive Reasoner

An impediment to the realization of the semantic web vision has been the inability of semantic web systems to successfully scale to large and expressive knowledge bases. In this talk, I will present advances in scaling ontology reasoning made over the past three years at IBM Research. I will also discuss three concrete applications of scalable ontology reasoning that illustrate its value and potential to transform how information is integrated, analyzed and exchanged. The first application showcases the use of ontology reasoning to automate common labor intensive and error prone clinical tasks, such as cohort selection of patients for clinical trials, infectious disease monitoring, and clinical decision support. An obstacle to automating these tasks is the need to bridge the semantic gap between raw patient data, such as laboratory tests, and the way clinicians interpret this data. The second demonstrates how ontologies can be effectively used to cleanse the output of text analytics over large text corpora. Finally, the last application shows how SHER technology enables efficient semantic search over biomedical literature.

Bio:
Achille Fokoue (http://domino.research.ibm.com/comm/research_people.nsf/pages/achille.index.html) is a researcher at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, NY, USA. His research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, data management, information integration, and concrete applications of semantic technologies in an enterprise context. His current work focuses on developing theories, algorithms and systems for scaling reasoning over large and very expressive description logics knowledge bases. He currently serves as IBM representative at the W3C OWL 2.0 Working Group.

Panos Ipeirotis is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Information, Operations, and Management Sciences at Leonard N. Stern School of Business of New York University. His area of expertise is databases and information retrieval, with an emphasis on management of textual data. His research interests include web searching, text and web mining, data cleaning and data integration. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2004 and a B.Sc. degree from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department (CEID) of the University of Patras, Greece in 1999. He has received two Microsoft Live Labs Awards, two "Best Paper" awards (IEEE ICDE 2005, ACM SIGMOD 2006), two "Best Paper Runner Up" awards (JCDL 2002, ACM KDD 2008), and is also a recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation.

The New York Times Company invites you, the New York Semantic Web Meetup to join Evan Sandhaus, Semantic Technologist, at The New York Times Building. Evan will present his work on The New York Times Annotated Corpus.

The New York Times Annotated Corpus is a collection of over 1.8 million articles annotated with rich metadata published by The New York Times between January 1, 1987 and July 19, 2007. With over 650,000 individually written summaries and 1.5 million manually tagged articles, it is my hope that The New York Times Annotated Corpus will prove to be a valuable resource for a number of natural language processing research areas, including document summarization, document categorization and automatic content extraction.

The New York Times is releasing the data in conjunction with the Linguistic Data Consortium. Details for obtaining the corpus can be found on their website at:

The Story of Topic Maps and Beyond

Michel will present Topic Maps and how he sees the future of Topic Maps in context of the emerging Semantic Web. Michel Biezunski is an internationally recognized expert in the field of information management. He has invented and promoted new ways of finding information, accelerating access to information which is really needed, and helping organize vast corpora of information assets. His working experience covers various domains, including the publishing, finance, healthcare, and media industries, and governmental agencies.

Michel's focus is in the area of semantic integration, auditable information systems, XML/SGML Applications, navigation models within complex information sets, and hyperlink-based models. He participated in the development of the HyTime standard, and is recognized as the inventor of the Topic Maps standards, together with Steven R. Newcomb. He has written many articles and developed and conducted numerous workshops centered on these new technologies. Michel is now working on innovative solutions for auditability and integration of information systems.

AltLaw was conceived by law professor Tim Wu (best known for coining the term "net neutrality") as a project to make common law -- the court opinions that determine what "The Law of the Land" actually is -- freely available and easy to search. Historically, court opinions have only been available to those with access to a law library or an expensive subscription to commercial
databases like Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis. AltLaw is an open-source project that provides a sophisticated search interface to over 800,000 court opinions.

This informal discussion may cover:
1. Using Solr/Lucene for both search and storage, without a database
2. Using Hadoop, EC2, and S3 for bulk data processing
3. Clojure, a great Lisp variant that integrates with Java
4. Getting semantic data from government data
5. How can AltLaw benefit from Semantic Web technology?
6. Should AltLaw be designing its own ontologies?

The law is meant to belong to the people, but it can be surprisingly hard to find. Case reports, a major part of the laws of the United States, are hard to get at, and even when on the Internet, rarely searchable. To get full access you generally need either a library of law reports, or an expensive subscription to an online database, which can cost hundreds of dollars per hour.

AltLaw is a small effort to change that—to make the common law a bit more common. AltLaw provides the first free, full-text searchable database of Supreme Court and Federal Appellate case reports. It is a resource for attorneys, legal scholars, and the general public.

Susie Stephens

Principal Research Scientist at Eli Lilly

Susie Stephens joined Eli Lilly in early 2007 as a Principal Research Scientist. Her role involves the creation of an Open Innovation Center in Boston in support of Lilly’s tailored therapeutics strategy. Her responsibilities include determining the business model for open innovation, and identifying and investing in external collaborations. Previously, Susie worked at Oracle where she led the development of the company’s core infrastructure product to enhance its capabilities for the life sciences industry. As such, she was heavily involved in providing support for RDF and OWL within the Oracle Database. Prior to joining Oracle, she was a Global Life Sciences Market Segment Manager at Sun Microsystems. Susie was previously chair of the W3C Semantic Web Education and Outreach Interest Group, and now co-chairs the W3C Semantic Web for Health Care and Life Sciences Interest Group. She is well known speaker at conferences, has published over 30 industry papers, and is on the advisory board of three companies. Susie has a Ph.D. in physiology.

All that semantic data that we will produce on the Semantic Web will need a place to stay, storage solutions can be build on top of conventional technology but will not provide fast dedicated access methods and optimized CRUD operations over RDF data. (RDF represents data in a webby form namely as a network graph with directed edges between nodes). Mulgara 2 on the other hand is a dedicated scalable RDF database that enables native Semantic Web solutions for a large number of applications. While Semantic Technologies continue to improve dramatically in the coming years and will bring us closer to the original Semantic Web vision, projects like Mulgara enable the enterprise now to migrate towards the Semantic Web.

This session will introduce the foundations of the Mulgara project technology and the details of optimizing a RDF triple store for real world application.
